How to Cut Through Terracotta With a Rod Saw

A terracotta pot is commonly used as a planter for gardening due to its sturdy and weather-resistant nature. Sometimes the pot you buy is overly large for the plant you want to put in it; instead of buying a new pot, you can cut down a terracotta pot to size. There are electric saws you can use to cut through materials like terracotta, but a carbide rod saw will safely cut through terracotta as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure where on the terracotta pot you want to cut it down to. Make a few marks around the pot where the cut will be made.

    • 2

Turn the pot over on one side and clamp the side of the pot to your work table to keep the pot firmly in place as you cut.

    • 3

Spray the pot with water in the area where you will make the cut. The water will reduce the friction as you cut the pot.

    • 4

Place the rod saw's blade one of the marks you made and begin sawing lightly back and forth to establish the cut.

    • 5

Continue sawing the pot using firmer pressure until you have cut halfway through the pot. Turn the pot over on it's other side and clamp it into place. Spray the pot with more water and saw down the rest of the pot.

    • 6

Sand the sharpened edge of the pot down so that it is smooth.
