Tools to Change the Fuel Boots on a John Deere 4230

The fuel boots on your John Deere 4230 are used to hold the fuel tank onto the tractor. If you find that you need to change the fuel boots on your 4230, you will need a few specific tools in order to get to the units and remove them from the tractor.
  1. Metal Pan

    • When you are working under the unit there will be gunk and grime -- not to mention fuel -- that could fall out of the fuel boots and onto your driveway or lawn. Place a metal pan under the boots to catch anything that drips from the tractor.

    Rags

    • Rags are going to be essential while changing out the boots. You will find grease, dirt, and mud all over the bottom of the unit, so use rags to wipe down the bolts and nuts so your wrenches do not slip.

    Pliers

    • Use pliers to loosen the nuts and bolts around the boots; you can also use pliers as forceps to remove smaller nuts and bolts or hold smaller parts in place.

    Gloves

    • The dirt and grease found in machinery is hard to clean off of your hands. Wearing rubber or work gloves will keep the grease from getting under your fingernails or in the grooves of the skin on your fingers.

    Replacement Boots

    • Once the boots have been removed from the tractor, you will need replacement boots in order to secure the fuel tank back to the 4230. You can find these at a local tractor supply shop or order them directly from John Deere.
