Case 446 Wiring

The Case 446 was a tractor introduced by J.I. Case Tractor Company, based in Winneconne, Wisconsin. It was manufactured between 1972 and 1988. The 446 is larger than the 444 series also manufactured by Case but smaller than the 448. The 446 is equipped with a 16 horsepower, two-cylinder engine. The 446 is a relatively old model of tractor, so care needs to be demonstrated when restoring and rewiring it.

Instructions

  1. Identifying the Wires

    • 1

Open the hood of the tractor. The engine is located under the hood in the front of the tractor. There is a button in the cab that, when pressed, will allow the hood to be opened.

    • 2

Look inside the front of the tractor and make sure that there are four wires. In order to start the engine, you will need four wires.

    • 3

Identify the ignition switch because each of these wires will need to be connected to it. The ignition switch is located toward the front of the tractor. It will be connected to a spark plug to the left of the front left headlight.

    Clean the Engine

    • 4

Remove all the spark plugs. The engine must be cleaned before the wiring process begins.

    • 5

Rotate the engine two revolutions by hand. This must be done manually to loosen any carbon and rust build-up that may have accumulated on the old tractor.

    • 6

Cover the cylinders with the light motor oil. This will ensure the tractor runs smoothly when you are finished working on it.

    • 7

Put the spark plugs back in.

    • 8

Spray some aluminum paint on the head gaskets if they are are not burnt. If your gaskets are burnt you will need to order new ones from Onan, the engine manufacturer.

    Wiring

    • 9

Take the yellow wire. It should be running from the starter Solenoid to the tab labeled "S" on the ignition switch. This wire activates the starter.

    • 10

Take the black wire with the white stripe running down it and connect it from the positive terminal on the ignition coil to the tab labeled "I" on the ignition switch. This wire provides the electric charge in the ignition process.

    • 11

Take the pink wire and connect it from the headlamps to the tab labeled "L" on the ignition switch. This will activate the headlights when the tractor is turned on.

    • 12

Take the orange wire and connect it between the inline fuse and the tab marked "B" on the ignition switch. This will activate the battery when starting the tractor.
