Loosen and remove the McCulloch’s fuel tank cap. Tilt the chainsaw over and carefully drain any remaining fuel into an empty approved fuel container. Refill the McCulloch with at least three-quarters of a tank of freshly mixed chainsaw fuel.
Loosen and remove the cylinder cover on top of the McCulloch with a screwdriver. Take the cover off and unscrew the air filter assembly from its mounting post on the engine. Brush off all components on the air filter assembly.
Reinstall the air filter and cylinder cover. Set the chainsaw on the ground so the chain won’t contact anything while you're adjusting the points. Start the chainsaw and let it run at a high idle for at least five minutes to warm it up.
Locate the idle speed screw hole on the side of the engine near the rear handle. Insert a small screwdriver into the idle hole. Turn the screw slowly clockwise until the clutch engages and the chain starts spinning.
Rotate the screw counterclockwise until the chain stops again. Adjust the screw clockwise or counterclockwise to locate the highest idle speed before the chains starts spinning.
Locate the low speed screw hole, just beside the idle speed screw hole. Insert the small screwdriver into the hole. Turn the screw slowly clockwise until you hear the engine start revving up to a higher-pitched whine.
Rotate the screw slowly counterclockwise until you hear the engine make a low bubbling or gurgling noise. Move the low speed screw in between these two settings to find the optimum low speed setting. Readjust the idle speed screw once the low speed screw has been set.
