How to Rewind the Twine on a Stihl Weedeater

The twine, or cutting string, on a Stihl weed eater slices at high speeds through blades of grass or weeds. When the twine breaks off, the operator taps the head to advance new line used for trimming. However, if the string was wound improperly the line won’t advance. The operator will need to remove the line spool and rewind the twine properly. Whenever the line runs out, the operator will need to replace and rewind new line onto the spool.

Shut down the engine; switch the ignition button into the “Off” setting. Wait for the head to stop moving and for the muffler to cool down before replacing the line. Set the trimmer on a flat workspace with the head pointed up.

    • 2

Grab the mowing head firmly and turn the button counterclockwise, or depress the tabs on the outside ring of the head, and lift the head cover off. Take the spool out of the trimming head.

    • 3

Pull off any old remaining twine. Wipe away any grass or debris inside the trimming head or on the spool with the rag. Cut off the appropriate length of replacement line for your Stihl model weed eater.

Stick the ends of both of the lines into the two holes on each half of the spool. Form a hook in the ends of the line, bending them lightly in the holes. Wind both lines around the spool according to the arrow seen on the spool’s bottom.

Press the line, leaving six inches, into the notches on the spool. Turn the spool over and press it down into the head. Feed both line ends through the eyelets on the mowing head. Reattach the head cover in the opposite manner as its removal.
