How to Adjust the Roll Pin on a Husqvarna Chainsaw

The roll pin, or toggle joint, connects the brake strap to the brake handle on a Husqvarna chainsaw. This pin rolls back, which stretches a spring, pulling the brake strap tight against the clutch, effectively stopping the chain. A critical safety component, the roll pin needs to be working properly for the operator to use the chainsaw safely. This roll pin, spring and brake strap must be adjusted to the right position for the chain brake to work.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the Husqvarna chainsaw off and unlock the chain brake, pulling backward on the front handle. Set the chainsaw on a level work area and unscrew the bar nuts with the wrench end of the combination bar tool.

    • 2

Remove the bar cover, bar and chain from the saw. Unscrew the top cylinder cover with the screwdriver end of the bar tool. Take the cover off and unhook the rubber boot from the tip of the spark plug. Unscrew the spark plug from the cylinder, using the wrench side of the bar tool.

    • 3

Pop off the circlip on the crankshaft stub, wedging the tip of the screwdriver underneath the metal clip and popping it off. Slide the washer, needle roller bearing and sprocket off the crankshaft stub.

    • 4

Push the front hand guard forward to engage the chain brake. Unscrew the two bolts holding the hand guard to the chainsaw. Lift the hand guard away from the saw.

    • 5

Unscrew the screw on the chain guide plate, right of the bar posts, and take the chain guide plate off the saw. Undo the four bolts holding the chain brake cover on top of the chain brake assembly.

    • 6

Press down, with the tip of the screwdriver, the retaining bush and pry the brake’s lever arm out of the saw. Lift the rear end of the spring slowly off its hook, using the tip of the screwdriver.

    • 7

Lift out the toggle joint, or roll pin, with the attached brake strap. Unhook the roll pin from the brake strap. Take out the retaining bush and brake spring. Clean all of the parts with the rag in the mild detergent.

    • 8

Check the condition of the roll pin and make sure it can properly adjust while connected to the spring. Replace the roll pin, if it’s bent or cracked, or replace the spring if either tip is bent. Make sure the brake strap is at least 0.8 millimeters thick.

    • 9

Reattach the toggle joint to the brake strap. Grease the moving parts on the toggle joint with the engine grease. Fit the brake strap and roll pin back to the saw.

    • 10

Grease the lever arm and set back on top of the toggle joint. Grease the spring and the retaining bush and set them back into the saw. Reassemble all other parts in reverse order.
