How to Build a Privacy Trellis You Can Move

A portable privacy trellis will provide screening from nosy neighbors, as well as a spot to plant vining vegetables or flowering plants. As the plant grows and covers the trellis, it will block the holes in the lattice and, at the same time, block the view. A portable trellis is on wheels, so you can move it to whatever spot requires the blocked view. Keep in mind that it will take some time for the plants to cover the trellis entirely.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a 48-by-18 inch plywood panel on a flat surface. Lay a 14 inch 1-by-1 piece of lumber along one of the 18 inch sides, 3/4 inch from the edge.

    • 2

Screw the piece into place with an electric drill and two wood screws. Repeat on the other 18 inch side with another 1-by-1. Lay a second 48-by-18 inch panel on the flat surface and screw two 1-by-1 pieces along its two sides in the same fashion. These are the front and back panels of the trellis box.

    • 3

Lay one 18-by-18 inch plywood panel on top of the front piece at a 90 degree angle to create the first side of the box. Screw the panel to the 1-by-1 with two wood screws and the drill.

    • 4

Screw the second 18-by-18 inch panel to the other side of the front piece to create the second side of the box. Secure it in place by screwing it to the 1-by-1.

    • 5

Lay the back panel over the two side panels. Screw the side panels to the 1-by-1 pieces on the back panel. Turn the box upside down and lay the third 48-by-18 inch panel over the bottom to create the floor. Screw the floor into the four 1-by-1 pieces.

    • 6

Lower one 46 inch long 1-by-1 wood piece into the box lengthwise so it rests on the floor and against the front panel. Screw three evenly placed screws through the piece and into the floor. Screw three screws through the front panel and into the piece. Repeat with a second 46 inch 1-by-1, screwing it into the floor and the back panel.

    • 7

Place two additional 14 inch 1-by-1 pieces into the box, one against either side panel. Secure them each by placing two screws through the side panel and into the 1-by-1, then one screw through the floor and up into the piece.

    • 8

Drill six drainage holes into the bottom of the box. Drill four holes through the 46 inch 1-by-1 floor supports, one in each corner, for the casters. Screw the casters onto the bottom of the box, through the holes.

    • 9

Lower a 68 inch by 45 inch lattice into the box. Secure the lattice into place by placing screws through the lattice and into the box at the top edge of the box. Put one screw every 6 inches.

    • 10

Fill the planter box with 1 inch of gravel, then fill it the rest of the way with potting soil. Plant the vining plants that will cover the trellis. Move the trellis into place.
