Simplicity Rear-Tine Tiller Parts

A Simplicity rear-tine tiller has several parts, according to the parts manual supplied by Simplicity. A rear-tine tiller has the tines located behind the motor, closer to your feet. The tiller is used to cultivate your soil before planting, during plant growth and after picking season. The parts of a Simplicity tiller can be broken up into categories.
  1. Frame and Tine Shield

    • The frame and tine shield are the main structural components of the Simplicity rear-tine tiller. The encasement holds the moving parts of the tiller, such as the controls, handles, motor, transmission and tines. A counterweight is installed on the side of the frame and tine shield to prevent the tiller from bucking when tilling. The tine shield protects you from flying debris once the tines begin to cultivate the soil.

    Chain Case, Wheel and Tine

    • The chain case, wheels and tine parts include all the cultivating components of the tiller. The tines dig into the dirt to cultivate the soil. The chain case holds the tiller drive components that turns the tines. Two wheels rest other either side of the tiller allowing you to drive the equipment.

    Traction Drive Chain Case

    • The traction drive chain case holds the drive chain, gears and encasement that turns the tines and wheels of the tiller. These parts require periodic lubrication to prevent them from prematurely wearing. One chain drives the wheels of the tiller, while the smaller chain drive the tines of the equipment. The sprockets and bearings turn the axle with drive pins. Washers and gaskets prevent the case from leaking lubrication.

    Handle and Control

    • The handles run down to the main body of the Simplicity rear-tine tiller so you can control the movement of the device. The handle support assembly holds most of the tiller's control levers. Along the side of the handles, the clutch handle bolts to the system. The clutch engages the tines and drive system of the tiller. The rear tine drive assembly is located at the bottom of the handles. These component parts attaches the rear tines to the drive case and transmission of the unit.

    Engine and Drive

    • The engine and drive of the tiller operates all the moving parts to the Simplicity. Most of the Simplicity tillers use Briggs and Stratton engines of varying horsepowers. The horsepower of the engine depends on the size and model of the tiller. Two belts attach to a pulley system located on the engine. One belt drives the chain system of the wheels, while the other belt rotates the rear tines. The engine has a gas tank located on the side and an oil reservoir to fill the lubricating fluid of the engine.
