How to Change a Clutch on an Echo Saw 301

The clutch on an Echo model 301 chain saw uses centrifugal force to transfer power from the crankshaft to the chain. When the crankshaft spins fast enough, the outward force generated causes the clutch shoes to expand and engage the drive sprocket and chain. You need to replace a clutch when any grinding noise emanates from the clutch area, sprockets get worn out quickly, or the clutch shoes wear below two millimeters. You should change the clutch immediately if you suspect that it's malfunctioning.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Place the Echo chain saw on a flat work surface. Disengage the safety brake, pulling back on the front hand guard. Turn the ignition to the "Off" position.

    • 2

Unscrew the bar nuts with the wrench side of the bar tool. Take the bar cover, chain and bar off the chain saw. Unscrew the top cylinder cover with the screwdriver end of the bar tool.

    • 3

Unhook the black spark plug wire from the spark plug. Unscrew the spark plug with the wrench side of the bar tool. Remove the spark plug from the cylinder and slide the piston stop into the hole.

    • 4

Turn the clutch with your hand until it stops, indicating that the piston has been blocked. Fit the clutch removal tool around the center of the clutch assembly. Unscrew the clutch hub clockwise, reverse thread, to remove the clutch.

    • 5

Slide the clutch assembly off the crankshaft stub. Check the condition of the sprocket, clutch drum and washer, and replace if they are worn or heavily gouged. Fit the new clutch assembly onto the crankshaft stub.

    • 6

Reattach the clutch removal tool and tighten the clutch hub counterclockwise. Remove the piston stop tool and refit the spark plug, wire, bar, chain and clutch cover to the Echo chain saw.
