How to Replace the Bearings on a Garden Cart

The wheels on a garden cart operate similarly to any other wheel on an axle. Bearings enable the wheels to spin easily on the fixed axle. Just like any other metal that encounters friction, garden cart wheel bearings eventually wear down and cause the wheels to become wobbly. Wheel bearing replacement is a simple task and requires few tools. Even though one set of bearings on the wheel may not seem as worn as the other, it’s a good idea to replace both sets at the same time.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the wheel from the garden cart. There are different methods of attaching wheels to carts so follow removal directions provided by the cart’s manufacturer.

    • 2

Lay the wheel on top of a 5-gallon bucket.

    • 3

Insert a long screwdriver into the axle hole, or hub, and rest the flat edge against the top of the bottom bearing, which is facing into the bucket.

    • 4

Tap the end of the screwdriver with a hammer until the bearing pops out into the bucket.

    • 5

Turn the wheel over and remove the other bearing the same way.

    • 6

Lay a new bearing inside the axle hole. Place a small block of wood on top of the new bearing. Tap on the wood to push the bearing into position.

    • 7

Turn the wheel over. Insert the second bearing into the hub and tap it into place.
