How to Hang Up a Bird Box in a Birch Tree

Bird boxes are one of the best ways to encourage wildlife to inhabit your backyard, and by picking a specific type of bird box, you can easily control which types of birds are most comfortable in your environment. Birch trees make an ideal support for these bird boxes, with their natural aesthetic and distinctive look. The coloring and appeal of a birch tree make it a natural location to hang rustic or natural-wood bird boxes, though white boxes will fit in nicely as well. With an appropriately sized ladder, hanging a bird box can be accomplished quickly and easily.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark two positions on the back of the bird box at which you will be installing the eyelet hooks. Mark them just higher than halfway up the back of the box, evenly spaced, and on the edges into the side boards if the rear of the box is made of especially thin wood.

    • 2

Predrill holes through both markings using a drill bit that is just a hair smaller in diameter than the eyelet hooks. Insert the eyelet hooks into the holes, rotating by hand or inserting a screwdriver into the eyelet and rotating clockwise to tighten the hooks. Rotate until the heads of the hooks are touching the wood surface and align both hooks to face the same direction.

    • 3

Pass the choke chain around the tree at the desired height, cutting off one of the end loops if necessary to allow the chain to pass all the way around the tree and feed through itself. Align the collar so that the spiked part of the chain faces into the tree.

Open the screwgate carabiners by rotating their gates and attach them to the eyelet hooks. Hold the bird box up to the choke collar and attach the carabiners to the chain loops that match up to their locations. Release the bird box and position the chain and box so that they are settled in place. Close the screwgates on the carabiners by rotating the gates.
