How to Build a Strong Pea Teepee

Bean teepees provide an ornamental yet utilitarian support system for pole bean vines. The simplest teepees consists of thin bamboo stakes or branches tied together at the top. These teepees may not withstand heavy winds or even the weight of an overly productive bean vine. Creating a sturdier teepee from long dowels or poles and anchoring them firmly in the ground ensures the structure can support your plants for the entire growing season.

Things You'll Need

  • Five 6-foot-long, 1/2-inch-diameter dowels
  • Drill
  • Garden twine
  • Stakes

Instructions

    • 1

Drill a 1/4-inch hole through each pole. Place the hole 2 inches down from the end of the pole.

    • 2

Thread a length of garden twine through the holes. Pull the twine tight and tie it in a knot. Wrap the ends of the twine around the bundle of poles two to three times, then tie in a double knot, firmly lashing the poles together.

    • 3

Stand the teepee up in the garden bed with the lashed end at the top. Spread the legs apart to form the teepee shape.

    • 4

Push the legs 4- to 6-inches into the soil to anchor the teepee in place. Further anchor the teepee and make it more sturdy by driving a 12-inch stake into the ground next to each leg. Tie the teepee leg to the stake with a length of twine.
