How to Replace the Line on a Single-Spool Weed Eater

The cutting line wraps around a spool inside the head of a Weed Eater trimmer. This line will gradually break off and wear down from hitting hard metal surfaces. When all of the line wears out or breaks off, you will need to replace the cutting line. Many models of Weed Eaters use a single line wrapped around the spool inside the head. To replace this line, you will need to remove the head and spool.

Instructions

    • 1

Move the ignition switch to the “Off” position and set the trimmer on the ground so the head faces up. Hold the spinning part of the head. Depending on model, unscrew the tab, pull out on the tab, or press the tab down and turn it to remove the head cover.

    • 2

Take the head cover off. Slide the single spool out of the head. Pull away any remaining line fragments. Wipe away any grass or debris inside the head and on the spool.

    • 3

Cut off the appropriate amount of replacement line for your trimmer. Check the instruction manual for the product specs for your particular model. Don’t overload the trimmer. Insert the trimmer line into the hole on the side of the spool.

    • 4

Wind the line tightly and evenly following the directional arrow on the spool’s bottom. Wind the line until 4 to 6 inches remain. Press the remaining line into the notch on the side of the spool.

    • 5

Turn the spool over. While threading the line through the eyelet, press the spool down into the head and turn it slightly until it locks into place. Refit the head cover in the reverse of how you removed it.
