How to Clean the Spark Arrestor Screen on a Chain Saw

The spark arrestor screen, required by federal regulations, prevents ignited embers from escaping the combustion chamber and the chain saw. These ignited embers can land in flammable material and start a fire. With the metal screens in place, the embers stay trapped in the saw. However, these screens also trap carbon gasses, which deposit along the screen and gradually restrict the movement of air into and out of the chain saw. You should clean the spark arrestor screen every 60 to 90 hours.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the chain saw on a flat workbench and disengage the ignition switch. Press the safety brake handle forward to engage the chain brake.

    • 2

Unscrew the two bolts on the front of the muffler with the Allen wrench. Take the bolts off and pull the muffler away from the chain saw. If your muffler is attached by two more bolts, unscrew them as well and pull the muffler away from the saw.

    • 3

Loosen and remove the screw on top of the muffler. Pull the spark arrestor screen up and out of the muffler. Brush off any excess debris from the screen.

    • 4

Submerge the screen in a pan of warm water and mild detergent. Scrub the screen thoroughly until it’s clean and the holes are cleared. If the screen is too dirty to clean, replace the screen.

    • 5

Slide the cleaned screen back into the muffler. Refit and tighten the screen’s screw. Fit the muffler back to the front of the chain saw. Tighten down all of the muffler’s bolts.
