How to Mow Level With a Weed Eater

A Weed Eater lawn trimmer spins a nylon line at high speeds to mow through tough-to-reach areas where a lawnmower can’t reach. However, this line cuts indiscriminately, and it is the operator’s responsibility to cut the right amount of grass. Improper mowing can scalp the grass, causing it to dry out and eventually die. If the head of the Weed Eater isn’t angled properly, it will mow unevenly and damage the grass. Getting this technique to work effectively and quickly will take practice.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on closed-toe shoes, eye and ear protection before starting up the Weed Eater. Set the Weed Eater on a level section of ground. Move the ignition switch into the “On” setting.

    • 2

Follow your model’s specific starting procedures and let the engine warm up for a few minutes. Pick up the Weed Eater.

    • 3

Put your left hand on the front control handle. Wrap your thumb and fingers around the handle. Put your right hand on the shaft, above the throttle. Wrap your thumb around the shaft.

    • 4

Place the forefinger on your right hand on the throttle trigger. Squeeze the trigger to accelerate the head. Hold the trimmer about 3 inches from your body, with your right hand level with your belt.

    • 5

Hold the head parallel with the ground, at least 1 to 2 inches above it. Try to move only the head and shaft left and right and not up or down. Squeeze the trigger fully when cutting grass. Let go of the trigger when walking with it and don’t drag the head on the ground.
