Shut off the Homelite’s ignition switch by moving the starter button to the “Off” position. Wait for the chain and engine to come to a stop. Pull back on the front hand guard to deactivate the chain brake if it’s engaged.
Set the chain saw on a level workbench. Put on leather work gloves. Place your nondominant hand on top of the front handle to brace the saw.
Loosen the two metal bar nuts on the right side of the chain saw, using the wrench. Loosen them until they’re finger tight, but leave them on.
Loosen the tension on the chain by turning the bar tensioner screw on the front of the saw counterclockwise until the chain hangs slack below the bar. Unscrew the bar nuts the rest of the way with your fingers.
Take the clutch cover off the saw. Lift the nose of the bar up and take the chain off the rear drive sprocket. Pull the bar and chain away from the saw. Slide the chain off the guide bar. Install a new chain in the reverse order.
