How to Check the Points on an Echo Chain Saw

The carburetor in an Echo chainsaw operates with three adjustable screws. What is commonly referred to as “checking the points” refers to ensuring these three screws are properly adjusted to the factory settings. Setting these points back to their original setting will allow the operator to monitor the chainsaw's performance and make any further carburetor adjustments as necessary. Carburetor adjustments can also damage the chainsaw if done improperly, so these points need to be set carefully.

Instructions

    • 1

Unscrew the top cylinder cover on the Echo saw. Take off the cover and remove the air filter from its mount. Brush the filter, the area around the filter and around the choke plate.

    • 2

Unscrew the muffler's two bolts with a wrench. Take the muffler off the saw. Unscrew the spark arrestor screen and remove it from the muffler. Brush off the screen or replace if it can’t be cleaned.

    • 3

Set the chainsaw on the ground so the chain won’t contact anything during adjustment. Start the Echo saw and let it warm up for five minutes before adjusting the carburetor. Shut off the engine again.

    • 4

Find the hole on the clutch side of the engine marked with an “H.” Turn the “H” screw counterclockwise with a small screwdriver until it stops. Don’t over-rotate this screw.

    • 5

Turn the “L” screw, just beside the “H” screw, to the midpoint between the counterclockwise and clockwise stop positions. Start the chainsaw’s engine again. Rotate the screw marked “T” for idle clockwise until the chain starts spinning.

    • 6

Turn the “T” screw counterclockwise until the chain stops spinning. Adjust the “T” screw back one-quarter turn counterclockwise from this point. Depress the trigger completely to full throttle for 10 seconds.

    • 7

Press the trigger to full throttle again to check for smooth acceleration. If it’s sluggish, adjust the “L” screw counterclockwise one-eighth turn and check again. Repeat until the acceleration is smooth. Readjust the idle as before if necessary.
