How to Hang Planters on Balcony Railings

A balcony railing can look plain and drab without any decoration or color. Using planters on your railing can not only brighten them up, but expand your space for gardening. Seasonal flowers can be planted, but also vegetables, turning your balcony into an urban farm. Planters can even be used to hold seasonal decorations once the weather turns and they can't be used for live plants any longer. Mix up your planters with flowers and plants of different sizes and heights to create interest and depth to your new landscape.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a special railing planter. These planters are divided up the bottom middle so they can hang directly on the railing without any special hardware -- and showcase your flowers on both sides of the rail.

    • 2

Drill a small hole about 1 inch down one side of a standard plastic pot. If your railing is wood, you can hang it from a nail or hook you install in the wood. If it is metal, purchase an "S" hook that will go over the rail and hold onto the pot.

    • 3

Use a rectangular planter that either comes with, or can be attached to, a railing bracket. These brackets attach with screws to the planter, and then hook over the railing.

    • 4

Secure the planter you have chosen to the railing.
