How to Build a Basket Planter

Making a basket planter allows you to display your decorative baskets and your favorite houseplant. Most baskets aren't suitable for planting in as they are, since the soil and water will damage the basket fibers. Preparing the basket for use as a planter keeps the soil in place and protects the basket from damage. Plastic baskets and those made of other resilient, waterproof material require less preparation than wood, straw and other natural basket materials.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a heavy duty garbage inside the basket, lining the interior to protect it from water and soil. Trim the edge of the garbage bag so the bag is slightly shorter than the basket.

    • 2

Poke holes in the bag 1 inch down from the top edge. Thread twine or yarn that matches the color of the basket through the holes. Weave the twine through the sides of the basket and tie in place. The twine prevents the bag from sliding down inside the basket.

    • 3

Set a planter drip tray inside the basket. Use a tray with a diameter approximately the same size as the basket bottom so it can catch most water drips from the plant.

    • 4

Transplant the plant into a pot liner planter. These thin-walled planters aren't attractive but they contain the soil, plant roots and moisture. Use a liner that has at least one bottom drainage hole.

    • 5

Set the plant inside the basket. Empty the drip tray after each irrigation so it doesn't fill with water and overflow.
