How Do I Change the Drive Star on a Husqvarna 350?

Designed for medium-duty woodcutting, the Husqvarna 350 chainsaw is a common choice of land and homeowners. Considering the work they do, chainsaws are remarkably simple mechanisms. Attached to a one-cylinder engine, a drive shaft and sprocket -- or drive “star” -- propels a revolving blade consisting of a chain with steel teeth. As the blade cuts through wood, over time the chain will stretch, causing the drive sprocket’s teeth to wear. When the chain begins to slip during cutting it is often a sign the drive star requires replacement.

Instructions

    • 1

Grasp the spark plug wire boot with your fingers and gently wiggle the boot from the plug.

    • 2

Remove the chainsaw sprocket cover, at the rear of the chain bar, with a wrench.

    • 3

Loosen the chain tension adjustment, located at the back of the chain bar, with a wrench or screwdriver. Remove the chain bar retaining nuts with a wrench. Pull the chain and bar free of the saw with your hand.

    • 4

Place the saw’s clutch tool over the clutch hub. Turn the reverse-threaded clutch-locking nut to the right with a wrench. Pull the clutch hub and drum, needle bearing, washer and drive sprocket from the drive shaft with your hands.

    • 5

Wipe the removed parts and the drive shaft with a clean cloth. Lubricate the shaft and needle nearing with a few drops of engine oil. Install the new sprocket and replace the washer, bearing and clutch drum back on the saw.

    • 6

Place the clutch hub over the drum. Hold the clutch hub in place with the clutch tool and tighten the lock nut with a wrench, turning the nut to the left.

Replace the chain on the bar and retighten the chain tension screw. Replace the sprocket cover and spark plug wire.
