How to Sharpen a Harbor Freight Electric Chain Saw

An electric chain saw will gradually dull from the wood it cuts. It will dull even quicker if it hits anything harder during cutting. For the chain saw to work properly and safely, the teeth need to be sharp. For this reason, you should frequently sharpen your Harbor Freight electric chain saw, usually before, during and after. This will reduce the amount of time spent sharpening, allow the chain’s teeth to wear evenly and reduce your cutting effort.

  Unplug the extension cord from the outlet on the chain saw. Wait for the chain to stop spinning before sharpening. Set the chain saw on a flat workbench.

  Locate the tooth on the chain with the heaviest amount of damage. Place the tip of the properly-sized round file into the base of the tooth. Hold the file parallel with the workbench.

  Adjust the angle of the file to match the stamped line on the top plate of the tooth, roughly 30 to 35 degrees. Hold the bar stead with your other hand and push the entire file across the tooth.

  Pick the file up and bring it back and repeat. Use smooth and even strokes across the length of the file. Count the number of strokes it takes to repair the most heavily-damaged tooth.

  Move up to the next tooth that is angled in the same direction as the first. Repeat the sharpening process and use the same number of file strokes. Sharpen all the teeth angled in the same direction. Turn the chain saw around and repeat for the other side, always using the same number of file strokes.
