How to Adjust the Carburetor for a Poulan Woodshark

The carburetor for a Poulan Woodshark chainsaw comes with a fully adjustable carburetor. This allows the operator to increase or decrease the amount of fuel mixing into the carburetor at idle and low engine speeds. When the operator opens these screws, more fuel flows in, and the engine speed decreases; when the operator closes down the screw, less fuel flows in, and the engine speed increases. Increasing the speed or over-adjusting the screws can lead to engine damage.

Instructions

    • 1

Unscrew the cylinder cover on top of the Woodshark’s engine. Lift the cover off and take out the air filter. Brush off the cover, the air filter and the area around the carburetor. Replace the air filter if it’s too dirty to clean.

    • 2

Refit the air filter and cylinder cover. Fill the Woodshark’s tank at least three-quarters full of freshly mixed Poulan chainsaw fuel. Set the chainsaw on the ground so it won’t hit anything during carburetor adjustment.

    • 3

Start the Woodshark’s engine and give it five minutes to warm up. Find the adjustment screws, on the clutch side of the engine.

    • 4

Rotate the screw marked for the idle speed. Turn the screw in clockwise so the engine speeds up and the chain begins moving. Turn the screw out counterclockwise so the engine slows. Move the screw to the highest rpm before the chain starts to spin.

    • 5

Rotate the screw marked for low speed in clockwise until the engine speeds up again. Rotate the screw out counterclockwise until the engine slows down. Move the screw to the point where the engine sounds smooth and clean.

    • 6

Fine tune the low speed screw as needed. Readjust the idle speed after finding the low speed setting.
