The Average Lawn Mower Life

The average life expectancy for lawn mowers is eight to 10 years, according to "Consumer Reports" test engineer Tom Mutchler in a "CBS Early Show" report. Maintenance, repair and brands are important considerations in choosing a lawn mower that lasts. Electric lawn mowers have lower repair costs, do not pollute and are easier for home garden use.
  1. Gas Mowers

    • Gas lawn mowers have the same average life expectancy as electric mowers, but their initial cost is lower by about $50, at the time of publication. Prices vary with engine size and width of mower. An electric mower covers 1/3 an acre on one battery charge. Homeowners sometimes choose the more expensive electric mowers to reduce the neighborhood engine and noise pollution of gas mowers. Some communities have discount trade-in programs for older model gas mowers in an effort to improve air quality.

    Maintenance

    • The average consumer replaces the home garden mower every six years, according to a power equipment trade industry report. The life expectancy of a lawn mower is improved by minimal maintenance routines. Lawn mower repair costs average $50 to $75 per hour and the cost of a new mower ranges from $300 to $600, at the time of publication. Maintenance should be done after each mowing job and before the end of the mowing season.

    After Mowing

    • Hose or scrape off grass clippings beneath the mowing deck after each use. A plastic putty knife provides a broad blade for scraping. Caked-on clippings disturb the air flow and corrode metal decks. Corroded metal mower decks significantly reduce the life expectancy of the mower. Brush off clippings from the upper portion of the mowing deck.

    End of Season

    • Check electric power mower extension cords for cracks and damage. Replace them if necessary. Have mower blades professionally sharpened once per season. Remove all grass and debris from underneath the mowing deck, inside cracks and between blades. Store the mower in a dry, well-ventilated area. Use a plastic sheet underneath to prevent moisture from corroding metal parts of the mowing deck.
