How to Splice a Saw Chain

Chain saw chains come in a wide variety of sizes and lengths. Chains will undergo an extreme amount of force during operation and will eventually stretch out, break or get damaged, requiring the operator to repair the chain or buy a new one. Some operators will also want to buy their chains on a bulk a roll. In either situation, the operator will need to break the chain, take out or install new links, and then put the chain back together.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the chain from the chain saw bar. This process will vary widely from saw to saw and may require different sets of tools for different models and styles.

    • 2

Locate the master chain on the chain loop. This chain will be marked by a colored dot on the rivet or in a similar fashion.

    • 3

Line the rivet up with the slot on the anvil on the chain breaker. Set the chain and anvil directly under the tip of the breaker’s punch. Center the punch with the rivet and the anvil.

    • 4

Punch the rivet out of the chain link. Stop punching the rivet if it bends or starts to bend; recheck the centering of the punch, rivet and anvil. Apply a little grease and try re-punching the rivet. Drive the rivet out. Take out as many links as necessary.

    • 5

Match the appropriate spinner parts and thrust dies for your specific chain. Place a small amount of grease onto the rivet. Thread the rivet into the chain link so the chain is roughly put back together.

    • 6

Secure the chain in place onto the spinner. Make sure the spinner is lined up with the dies and the chain link’s openings. Rotate the spinner’s handle and the thrust handle to push the rivet into place and form the rivet head.

    • 7

Remove the chain from the spinner once the new rivet head is formed. Make sure the rivet head is properly secured to the chain.
