How to Change the String on My Craftsman Gas Weedwacker

Craftsman "Weedwacker" gas-powered trimmers use a spinning plastic line to slice through problem grasses, weeds and small plants. Trimming line, which comes wrapped around a plastic spool, is available in several grades; the one you choose depends on the type of plant you are planning to cut. Thin line tends to break when it strikes woody plants, trees or metal objects like fence posts and washing lines. Installing new trimming line is designed to be simple; you will likely have to complete this task several times during the life of the trimmer.

  Stop the trimmer and allow the engine to cool down. The engine must not be running while you work on the line.

  Pull the guide plate with the old line off the bottom of the trimmer. Wipe away compacted plant material gathered around the cutting head.

  Push the guide plate back, lining the arrow up with the "A" or "B" marking, depending on the type of line you plan to install. "A" is for medium or heavy cutting line, "B" is for thin line.

  Insert both ends of the replacement strip of line through the holes in the cutting head and pull the ends through the other side. The line is now protruding several inches on each side of the cutting head. The line should be equal in length on both sides.
