How to Make a Pot Out of Felt

Fabric pots are a nice alternative to traditional plastic planters. Pots made of felt are flexible, allow more oxygen to penetrate the roots of the plants and encourage lateral rather than circular growth of the plant roots. When roots hit the sides of a hard pot, they start circling and wrapping around themselves, making the plants weaker. In a growing pot made of felt, roots penetrate or grow into the fabric, causing “self pruning,” which makes for stronger plants.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay one felt circle on top of the other and align the edges. Pin them together, if necessary. Sew the two circles together using the pressure foot as a guide.

    • 2

Lay one felt rectangle on top of the other and align the edges. Pin them together, if necessary. Sew the two rectangles together using the pressure foot as a guide.

    • 3

Fold the felt rectangle in half and align the short ends. Pin them together, if necessary. Sew the two short ends together, forming a loop. Double stitch for durability.

    • 4

Pin the felt circle to the inside of the loop around its circumference. The loop is the sides of the pot, the circle is the bottom. You should pin the circle to the right side of the loop, not the seam side. Stitch the bottom of the pot to the sides. Double stitch for durability.

Reach inside the pot and pull the bottom out, turning the pot right-side-out with the seams inside. Push the bottom flat, fill it with dirt and get ready to grow.
