How to Restring a Leaf Shredder

Leaf shredders are handy garden tools that allow home owners to turn fall leaves into chopped mulch for other areas of the yard. The devices have an electric motor and either mount over a trash can or come with their own collection bin. The cutting is performed by an internal nylon cord that rotates rapidly, much like a standard string trimmer. When the cord runs out, you simply replace it to start shredding again.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet if the machine was in use when the string ran out. Wail until the machine stops completely and allow it to cool down for five to 10 minutes since some parts heat up during use

    • 2

Look at the top of the machine to locate the plastic funnel where you load the leaves. Trace the funnel down to where it attaches to the base and push down on the metal clips that secure it in place. Once the clips are unlatched, grasp the funnel and pull it up to detach it from the base.

    • 3

Put on work gloves and look at the hub on the motor where the string attaches. Grasp any cord remnants that remain in the machine and pull them out. Brush out any leaf debris or twigs that are around the spinner head.

    • 4

Open a package of replacement nylon string that is the appropriate size for your machine, per the manufacturer's directions. Using scissors, cut the line off at the length indicated by the manufacturer. If you purchase line manufactured specifically for the leaf shredder, it has indentions in it to indicate the proper length to cut.

    • 5

Locate the holes on the spinner head where the string attaches. There should be two sets of holes on either side. Insert the end of one cord through one of the holes and pull it back through the adjacent hole. Pull until the ends of the sting are even.

    • 6

Pull both ends through the ferrule on the spinner head.

    • 7

Install another line in the same manner, threading it first through the remaining two holes in the post, then out the ferrule.

    • 8

Place the funnel back on top of the base and raise the metal clips to secure it in place.
