How to Adjust the Air/Fuel Ratio on a Snow Blower

Snow blower engines have a carburetor which controls the air to fuel ratio that enters the engine. Air and fuel mix in the carburetor to regulate the engine speed. If the mixture has too much fuel, or too little, the engine will sputter and may stop working while in the middle of a job. Adjusting the carburetor screws to regulate the air and fuel ratio will improve fuel efficiency and prevent performance issues with the engine.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the carburetor on the machine.

    • 2

Find the adjustment screws for the carburetor. The screws are located on the carburetor body, usually on the side. There are usually holes in the cover of the engine so you can reach the screws with a screwdriver.

    • 3

Turn the idle screw clockwise until it will not turn any longer. Turn it back counterclockwise 1 1/4 turns to set it.

    • 4

Start the snow blower and set it to the highest speed setting.

    • 5

Turn the engine speed or "H" screw counterclockwise until the engine begins to run rough. Turn the screw back out a one-half turn to set the engine carburetor to the correct speed.
