How Do I Convert Wheels on a United Farm Tools Grain Cart?

United Farm Tools manufactures farm equipment for planting, cultivating and harvesting. A United Farm Tools grain cart is a large piece of equipment used for storing and transporting grain from farm fields to holding facilities. It is not motorized and it is usually pulled by a tractor. The large rubber wheels on this grain cart are similar to those found on farm tractors. When the wheels on the cart need to be replaced, it is possible to convert the wheels to ones of a similar dimension.

Instructions

    • 1

Park the cart on a level concrete surface. Put blocks of wood against the underside of both tires to stabilize the cart. Kick the wood into place so that the blocks are snug against the tires.

    • 2

Raise the cart into the air with a heavy-duty jack just enough so the tires are no longer touching the concrete. Support the cart with a jack stand.

    • 3

Deflate the tire by removing the valve core. Use a tire iron to loosen a space big enough to insert the bead breaking tool on the outside bead of the tire. Attach the bead breaking tool to the rim. Turn the handle of the tool to force the bead of the tire off the rim. Repeat this step for the inside bead of the tire.

    • 4

Lubricate the tire bead and bead seat area with a mounting lubricant. This will make it easier to remove the tire.

    • 5

Insert the tire irons under the bead at the top of the tire. Pry the bead over the lip of the rim. Remove one of the tire irons and insert it next to the other iron further down the tire. Work your way down the tire, continuing this method until the outside bead of the tire is off the rim. Repeat this step for the inside bead of the tire.

    • 6

Remove the tube from the tire by carefully pulling the tube outward. Remove the tire from the rim. Inspect the rim for any damage and remove any rust or metal burrs with a wire brush. If you are replacing the rim, loosen the nuts with a wrench and remove the rim from the axle with the help of an assistant.

    • 7

Position the new rim onto the axle with the help of an assistant and tighten the nuts. Lubricate the inside bead of the new tire with mounting lubricant. Mount the tire so the inside bead sits on the rim at the top of the wheel. Use tire irons to fit the inside bead over both sides of the rim, doing the bottom last.

    • 8

Install the tube into the tire. Slide the valve stem through the valve hole. Position the tube over the rim and inflate with a small amount of air. Lubricate the outside bead of the tire. Use tire irons to fit the outside bead of the tire over the rim at the top. Continue fitting the tire over the rim with the tire irons until the tire is completely on the rim.

    • 9

Lower the cart until the rim is centered in the tire. The tire beads and the rim flanges must align before the tire is inflated. Slowly inflate the tire until the beads are seated on the rim. After the tire beads have been seated, deflate the tire and re-inflate it according to the manufacturer's specifications.
