How to Replace the Needle Valve for a Sears Carburetor

Sears carburetors are used on a lot of lawn equipment products, including Craftsman push mowers and weed trimmers. Inside a Sears carburetor is a needle valve, which helps regulate the amount of fuel that enters the carburetor during use of the engine. If the needle valve is bent or clogged, it will not move, causing your engine to cut out. Sometimes cleaning the needle valve is enough to fix the problem, but a bent needle valve needs to be replaced.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the carburetor from your machine. This procedure will depend on the machine, but it usually requires removing bolts or screws using a wrench or a screwdriver.

    • 2

Remove the screws from the bottom plate of the carburetor. There will be two to four screws depending on the carburetor type.

    • 3

Pull on the carburetor diaphragm to remove it from the carburetor.

    • 4

Remove the screw holding the needle valve mechanism in place on the bottom of the carburetor. Place a thumb on the spring valve while removing the screw; it is spring loaded and will shoot out if not held in place.

    • 5

      Remove the needle valve.

    • 6

Insert the new spring and needle valve into the carburetor. Place the gasket diaphragm back in place and replace the bottom plate and screws.
