John Deere 55V Chainsaw Features

The John Deere 55V is an older, residential model chainsaw. Although it has the John Deere name on it, John Deere had a production contract with chainsaw manufacturer Echo at that time, so Echo actually made the 55V chainsaw. John Deere no longer supports this chainsaw and cannot obtain parts for it, but you can get parts through Echo.
  1. Identification

    • The John Deere 55V is a residential, 2-cycle single cylinder chainsaw for cutting tree limbs. It has a 64.2 cc engine with a Walbro carburetor. The 55V chainsaw is gas powered and requires a mixture of regular grade gasoline and air-cooled two-stroke engine oil. The proper gas to oil ratio is 32 to one. The John Deere 55V has a recoil starter and an automatic clutch.

    Specifications

    • The John Deere 55V chainsaw is 16.4 inches long, 10.1 inches wide and 11 inches tall. It weighs 6.5 pounds without the chain and guide bar and 14.3 pounds total. The fuel tank has a capacity of 22 fluid ounces and the chain oil tank has a capacity of 10.2 fluid ounces. The standard guide bar is 20 inches long, but you can buy a 16-inch or 24-inch guide bar for the 55V chainsaw.

    Features

    • The John Deere 55V chainsaw has a foam-covered front handle and plastic back handle with a throttle control latch. Both handles have a guard that protects your hand in case of a chain break or kickback. The kick guard on the front of the guide bar protects you if the chain gets caught, causing the chainsaw to kick back toward you. The throttle control lockout near the front handle prevents the accidental opening of the throttle.

    Precautions

    • The John Deere 55V chainsaw does not have a chain brake, which automatically stops the chain if the guide bar kicks back and makes contact with the front hand guard. Always keep a firm grip on the chainsaw with both hands when it is running. Wear proper safety gear when using the John Deere 55V chainsaw, including protective gloves, eye protection and head protection. Make sure the chainsaw is not touching anything when you start it and shut off the engine before you put the chainsaw down.
