How to Troubleshoot a Craftsman Model No. 917.773761 Engine That Will Not Turn Over

The Craftsman 917.773761 is a wheeled weed trimmer — a hybrid of a lawnmower and a handheld line cutter. The unit gets its power from an exposed gasoline powered engine mounted between the rear wheels. Problems turning the engine over using the starter cord often have a simple fix. There could be a problem with the fuel, the air filter or spark plug. Troubleshooting the motor will help you identify and correct the issue.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the air filter assembly on the right side of the motor as you stand behind the trimmer. Remove the screw at the top and open the case to reveal the air filter. Bang out any dust and debris or, if the filter has been used for more than one season, install a replacement. Close up the case, replace the screw and try the motor again.

    • 2

Top up the fuel tank; it could be out of gas. If the existing fuel has been sitting in the trimmer longer than a year, drain the tank and fill up with fresh gasoline. Moisture can sometimes find its way into the tank and prevent the fuel igniting properly in the engine.

Make sure the spark plug wire is pushed firmly in place over the spark plug. You might have knocked the wire loose while you were moving the trimmer in or out of its storage area. Unscrew the spark plug if it has been used for more than 100 hours. Screw in a new Champion RJ19LM or J19LM at a gap of 0.030 inches and try the engine again.

Move the throttle control lever on the handle of the trimmer to the "Fast" position and press the primer bulb — located beside the air filter assembly — three times if you are starting the engine from cold. These devices make it easier to start difficult engines.
