How to Build Your Own Planter Box From a Futon Frame

Turn an old wooden futon frame into a useful planter box by tearing it apart and rebuilding. Line the planter box with plastic garbage bags to keep the wood from rotting and paint the exterior to prolong its life. You'll need to use a saw to cut apart the futon, so wear safety goggles to protect your eyes. If you are uncomfortable using a circular saw, a hand saw will work, but will take longer.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure out 20 slats on the futon frame. Each slat should be 12 inches long.

    • 2

Put on the goggles and use the saw to cut each 12-inch slat free.

    • 3

Lay one slat on a flat surface. Lay four slats on top of it to form one side of the planter. The first slat should go up and down and the other four side to side.

    • 4

Hammer one nail into the middle of each of the four slats to attach them to the first slat below.

    • 5

Place another slat below the four slats on the other side and use the hammer and nails to attach the four slats to the slat beneath.

    • 6

Repeat, attaching four slats to two on each side. You have now have two sides of the planter.

    • 7

Stand one of the planter sides up, so that the two slats are vertical and the four slats run horizontally. Line up four more slats on the outer edge of the planter side perpendicularly, so that you have an "L" shape. Attach those four slats to the side of the planter by hammering a nail through the middle of each slat, attaching them to the side, vertical slat. Repeat with the other planter side and the remaining four slats.

    • 8

Place the two "L" shaped planter sides together to form a square. Connect the planter sides together by hammering nails into the slats on the the unattached sides.

    • 9

Push the garbage bag inside the planter box so that it lines the four sides. Smooth it down, then use the staple gun to staple it to the wooden slats. The plastic should cover the four inside sides as well as the bottom of the planter. Trim away any excess plastic.

    • 10

Turn the planter upside down so that the plastic bag lined bottom faces up. Place the hardware cloth over the bottom. Use the wire clippers to trim it so that it lines up with the edges of the sides of the planter. Use the staple gun to secure it to the sides of the box.

    • 11

Turn the box right side up. Poke a few holes into the plastic lining the bottom of the box for drainage.

    • 12

Paint the exterior of the planter with the paint and paint brush or spray paint if desired.
