How to Check the Points on Echo Trimmers

The points on an Echo refer to the idle, low and high speeds of the trimmer, or the points where they transition from one stage to the next. When the operator squeezes the trigger, it opens a valve on the carburetor, allowing sufficient fuel in for the required engine speed. If the valve doesn’t open enough, or opens too far, the fuel mixture will be wrong and engine performance will suffer. Checking these points will allow the operator to ensure the Echo trimmer operates as efficiently as possible.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the Echo trimmer on the ground away from any object the head may hit during idle-, low- and high-speed adjustment. Start the trimmer, and allow it to warm up for at least five minutes.

    • 2

Connect the tachometer to the trimmer’s ignition wire, which is on top of most Echo trimmers. Allow the engine to idle, and check the reading. Idle speed should be between 2,400 and 3,200 rpm.

    • 3

Adjust the idle-speed screw, on the side of the carburetor, clockwise to increase the idle speed and counterclockwise to decrease the idle speed using the screwdriver. Locate the highest possible rpm before the head starts spinning, but never go above 3,200 rpm.

    • 4

Squeeze the throttle until it is in the wide-open position. Check the reading on the tachometer again. Wide-open throttle speed should be between 8,000 and 9,000 rpm.

    • 5

Adjust the high-speed screw, next to the idle-speed screw, clockwise or counterclockwise until the speed falls within the safe operating range.
