Information on How to Replace the Bar for a Chain Saw Sprocket

Because the chain of a chain saw revolves around the guide bar at such high speeds, the bar undergoes a lot of tension and stress. This stress eventually causes the bar to wear out on the rails. When the rails get too small, the chain won’t pass smoothly across the bar, and the bar must be replaced. For it to be replaced properly, however, the operator must match the measurements of the drive sprocket with the new bar.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the chain saw on a flat work space. Pull back on the front hand guard to unlock the safety brake. Loosen and remove the two bar nuts on the drive side of the engine.

    • 2

Remove the bar cover, bar and chain. Separate the chain from the bar. Locate the chain saw’s specifications. For most this information can be found in the operator’s manual. For others, it may be included as a string of letters and numbers on the rear of the bar.

    • 3

Locate the sprocket’s pitch and the number of drive slots, or teeth on the sprocket. Locate the gauge of the chain saw’s chain. The gauge measures the thickness of the drive link, on the inner ring of the chain, and this must match the bar groove’s width.

Replace the old bar with any bar that matches the sprocket’s pitch and the chain’s gauge. Fit the old chain back to the bar, teeth angled forward. Hook the chain around the drive sprocket and lay them flat. Refit the bar cover and tighten down both bar nuts.
