The Primer Bulb Sticks on My Chainsaw

Most chainsaws use a 2-cycle gas engine to power the saw blade. The primer bulb is attached to the carburetor. The bulb squirts a small amount of gasoline into the carburetor, which primes the engine, making it easier to start. Primer bulbs should move freely to prevent problems with the engine. A primer bulb that sticks may prevent proper priming of the engine. There are several ways to solve the issue.
  1. Gunk

    • The primer bulb needs to remain clean to prevent the plastic from sticking when the chainsaw is primed. Touch the bulb to see if it feels sticky. Excess oil or other fluids from the engine can cause stickiness to occur. Wipe down the primer bulb regularly with a clean cloth dipped in mineral spirits to remove built up gunk. Regular cleaning of the unit will prevent the bulb from sticking.

    Broken Bulb

    • Older bulbs will eventually give into the stress of being pressed down. The plastic will feel worn, dry and may crack. A cracked or worn bulb will not have the elasticity to pop back into place after priming the engine. You will need to remove the primer bulb from the machine and replace it if you notice signs of wear.

    Removing the Carburetor

    • Removal of the carburetor is necessary to replace the primer bulb. Remove the screw from the air filter cover. Lift out the air filter from the machine to expose the screws holding the carburetor in place. Remove the carburetor cover to expose the primer bulb. Remove the screws holding the primer bulb in place. Remote primer bulbs are not attached to the carburetor. Instead, they have fuel lines leading to the carburetor. Clamp off the fuel line with a pair of pliers before unscrewing the primer bulb.

    Replacement

    • Replacement primer bulbs are available from most hardware stores. Bring the old primer bulb into the store with you to find the proper replacement. If a primer bulb for your machine is not available, you can contact your chainsaw manufacturer to obtain a replacement part.
