How to Use Clear Biodegradable Mulch

The relatively new mulching products that are biodegradable make it unnecessary to pull plastic up from the soil after the growing season ends because they dissolve into the soil. Clear plastic mulch sheets can raise the soil temperature effectively in a growing area, making it possible to plant seeds and seedlings earlier in the spring. Clear mulch can also help suppress weeds without the use of chemical herbicides.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the soil with the garden spade. Cultivate the soil down to a depth of at least 4 inches. Add the desired amount of compost to improve the soil and mix it in well with the garden spade to incorporate it completely. Rake the soil smooth with the rake to make it level.

    • 2

Moisten the soil with the garden hose to make it damp. Spray the hose over the soil area evenly until you moisten it completely. Do not add so much water that you create puddles.

    • 3

Spread the clear biodegradable mulch sheets over the soil in a neat layer. If you are using more than one width of sheet, overlap the sheets about 2 to 3 inches to ensure complete coverage.

Secure the mulch sheets with large stones or by pushing mulch clips down through the mulch and into the soil. Space the stones or the clips about every 2 to 3 feet along the edges of the sheets.
