How to Remove the Gear Assembly From the Axle of a Snowblower

Snowblowers can help clear even a deep snow drift quickly. But if your blower has a broken axle or axle gear assembly, it can't move and won't be of much use. The main challenge in removing the gear assembly from the snowblower's axle is removing the chain, but a special tool called a chain splitter can be purchased or rented to make this process easier.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench
  • Socket set
  • Pliers
  • Penetrating lubricant

Instructions

    • 1

Set the snowblower in the "Park" position.

    • 2

Remove the spark plug boot at the side or top of the engine compartment beneath the snow hopper. The boot is about 2 to 3 inches long and cylinder-shaped. Grasp the boot firmly and pull it off with your fingers.

    • 3

Turn the snowblower on its side so you can access the axle and chain beneath.

    • 4

Locate the chain leading from the engine to the gear on the axle. Use a chain splitter to cut the chain apart at one of the links between the engine and the gear. Pull the chain out of the engine.

    • 5

Remove the caps, if present, of the wheels on both sides by prying them off with a flat bladed screwdriver. Loosen the wheel bolts with a socket wrench and pull off the wheels.

    • 6

Use a pair of pliers to pull out the pins holding the wheel plates in place on the axle. On some snowblowers, these may be held in place with bolts instead of pins. Pull the plates off the axle.

    • 7

Loosen the bolts holding the gear in place on the axle. Grasp the gear with one hand and slide the axle out through the sides of the snowblower.
