How to Install an After Market Triple Clamp

Triple clamps are used in vehicles with handlebars, such as motorcycles and riding lawnmowers. If you crash a vehicle that has a standard triple clamp installed, your handlebars may bend and require adjustment or replacement. Aftermarket triple clamps are available that offer more support and flexibility, which may prevent damage to the handlebars in a collision. Installing your aftermarket triple clamp only takes a few minutes once you have removed the handlebars and original triple clamp.

Instructions

    • 1

Disassemble and remove your handlebars, forks and triple clamp according to the service manual for your vehicle.

    • 2

Remove the top lock nut, the washer and the plate from the top of the new triple clamp assembly. If your triple clamp did not come assembled as one piece, you do not need to complete this step.

    • 3

Slide the bearing down onto the bottom portion of the triple clamp assembly rod, and slide the bottom portion of the triple clamp up into the steering head. The bearing and the steering head should already be lightly greased. If it has not been greased, follow the greasing instructions on your service manual.

    • 4

Hold the bottom portion of the triple clamp in place with one hand and install the top lock nut, by hand, on the top of the steering head. Test the tension of the lower portion by turning it. It should turn with ease. Adjust the lock nut if the lower portion does not move easily by loosening the lock nut and tightening it to a different tension. Test the tension again to determine whether the lower portion moves easily after the adjustment.

    • 5

Install the second lock nut above the first one, and line up the grooves on the sides of both nuts. Once the grooves are aligned, slide the washer with legs down to lock the two lock nuts together.

    • 6

Put the top portion of the triple clamp into place on top of the steering head, and pull the clutch cable through the hole in the triple clamp.

    • 7

Slide the washer into place on the triple clamp rod, and hand tighten the nut to hold it on.

    • 8

Replace the forks and handlebars according to your service manual.
