Examine the wood chipper, making sure the chipper chute, intake area and the cutting chamber are empty. Debris lodged in the machine can cause problems such as binding when the chipper is started. Make sure there are no rocks, bottles, cans, pieces of metal or other items in the piles to be shredded. Put on gloves and safety glasses.
Fill the gas tank and tightly replace the gas cap to prevent vapors from leaking out. Press the primer button or bulb to prime the carburetor for starting. Pull the handle on the recoil starter to bring the engine to life.
Feed the hopper with yard and lawn debris. Push leaves, pine needles, pinecones or other small debris with larger pieces, such as tree branches. Never push waste toward the cutting chute with your hands. Feed only one branch into the chute at a time to avoid jamming.
