How to Make Quail Yard Art

Quails are particularly easy to outline and shadow, making these birds the perfect inspiration for yard art. Quails, such as that of the California quail and Gambel's quail, are well known for their head plumes that curl up from the top. The Scaled quail, however, has a Mohawk atop its head. Some quail, such as the Montezuma quail, have no significant head features. You can make yard art patterned after any type of quail; however, choosing one with a plume will help make it identifiable and add more character to the yard or garden.

Quail template
Cardboard or poster board
Scissors
1/4-inch-thick plywood
Scroll saw
Sandpaper
Wooden stakes
Nails
Hammer
Outdoor house paint, stain, clear coat or other outdoor-safe paint

Instructions

  Create a quail pattern by tracing a printed template or free-hand drawing a quail onto cardboard or poster board. Cut out the pattern. Make a pattern for each desired size.

  Trace the pattern onto a piece of plywood and use the scroll saw to cut out the quail shapes. Sand the edges if desired.

  Center a wooden stake on the back of the quail cutout. Hammer two nails from the front of the quail to secure the cutout to the stake.

  Paint or stain the quail as desired or cover with a clear-coat treatment to prevent weather damage. Allow the paint or treatment to dry thoroughly.

  Hammer the stake into the yard at the desired location, taking care not to hit the quail or split the wood.
