How to Make a Round Cement Planter

Prepare your forms. To make this piece, use a large mixing bowl (the planter) and a small mixing bowl(the stand). Spray both lightly (but to get full coverage) with a non stick cooking spray. This acts as a releasing agent when removing from your form.

In the wheelbarrow mix 2- 5 gallon buckets of peat moss, 1 1/2 - 5 gallon buckets of portland cement, 1 - 5 gallon bucket of sand. Add water and mix with shovel until you get a consistency of wet mud. For the Large Bowl (Planter) press mixture into form making sure bottom and sides are at least 1" thick. Smooth the bottom and sides that are exposed to make more attractive. Use the dowel to poke a hole in the bottom of the bowl for drainage. For the small bowl (stand) completely fill the bowl with the mixture making sure to press down firmly to avoid gaps in the mixture.

Use your sharp edged tool to cut away excess mixture off of the rim of the bowl (this will give a more finished look)also smooth the base of the stand (this will allow the base to sit evenly if used on a flat surface) Mist the pieces with the spray bottle of water and cover with plastic. Allow to sit for 2 days.

Remove from the forms by turning upside down gently. The releasing agent will help mixture to come out of the form more easily. Take a wire brush and go over the entire outside surface. This will help to make the peat moss more visible and give a more organic / older look. Spray the planter again with water and re-cover with plastic. Let them sit for 7 days before placing in your garden. Allow 30 days before actually planting plants.
