Design your maze layout on paper. Begin by drawing the direct path in and out of the maze then fill in the surrounding paths. In designing the maze paths keep in mind the types of plants you are using and what they will look like in full bloom.
Mark off the area to be used for the maze using the garden stakes and string. If you have chosen to create a round or oval maze, it is best to mark the center of your maze first. Use a piece of string as a spoke to assemble the outside barrier of the maze. Using the stakes and string will help you alter your original layout as needed without the hassle of digging up or moving plants. When stringing the stakes together remember to leave an opening for the entrance and exit of the maze.
Complete the maze design using the string as the lines in your layout. Use the stakes to help distinguish corners or curves in the paths. Add the details starting with the center of the maze and working outward. This will allow you to adjust your design to fit the allotted space in your yard.
Create the path walls by placing the plants beneath the string design. Once all the plants are in place correct any flaws in the design where the size of the plant may not have been taken into consideration or access to the plant for care may be an issue.
Set each plant in the ground at its proper depth.
Decorate the maze with figurines and other garden décor. Incorporate a stool or bench in the center of the maze for the opportunity to enjoy the maze looking out from the center.
