Clay Pot Water Fountains Instructions

Clay pot water fountains are simple to construct and will add a soothing touch to your home, patio or garden. Select from colorful ceramic clay pots or a more natural looking terracotta pot to make your fountain. You can buy submersible fountain pumps from online retailers or from your local garden supply.
  1. Materials

    • Select a clay pot that's at least 10 inches in diameter and 8 inches tall to make your water fountain.

Other materials you will need include a submersible fountain pump and a fountain head.

Decorative stones such as river rock or colorful glass rocks add dimension to a fountain and also will help to hide the fountain pump from view.

If the clay pot is large enough, consider adding bamboo stalks or other water plants for decoration.

    Assembly

    • If your pot has drainage holes seal them with plumber's putty or silicone so that the pot is watertight. If the electrical cord from your fountain pump will fit through the drainage hole, you could seal around the cord and make a neater fountain.

Glue feet to the base of the pot or plan to stand the fountain on a plant stand so that the cord will drape from beneath. Use similarly sized decorative stones as feet and glue them on with silicone or waterproof adhesive. Allow the adhesive to dry before proceeding.

Attach the fountain head to the spout on the submersible fountain pump. Extend the head as far as you need to reach the rim of the pot. If you did not insert the pump's electrical cord through the drainage opening in the base of the pot, run the cord over the side of the planter. You can camouflage it with paint, if you wish. Allow the paint to dry before you proceed.

Fill in around the fountain pump with decorative stone. Place the rocks loosely so that there is room for water to fill in between. Fill the pot with water and turn on the pump. You may need to adjust the fountain head so that the water flow, or spray, fits inside the pot. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for making these adjustments.
