How to Roll a Steel Plate

The size of the power roll required to roll a steel plate will depend on the thickness of the steel plate. When you are rolling the steel sheet, you will want to take the rolling process slowly because you will not want to over roll the steel plate. Over rolling occurs when the plate is rolled too hard and the ends overlap. With heavy steel plate, it is difficult to bring the steel plate back to its correct size without damaging the surface of the plate.

Things You'll Need

  • Steel plate, cut to size
  • Power roll

Instructions

    • 1

Adjust the front feeder rolls of the power roll to the relative size of the steel plate and lower the bending roll to its full down position.

    • 2

Feed one end of the steel sheet into the power roll and make sure that the distance between the feeder rolls is greater than the thickness of the steel plate.

    • 3

Start the power roll and depress the control pedal to feed the steel plate into power roll. Watch how the steel plate reacts when it exits the power roll. If the steel plate shows no signs of rolling, reverse the direction of the power roll and raise the bending roll slightly.

    • 4

Send the steel plate through the power roll one full cycle and then reverse the direction to bring the steel plate back toward you.

    • 5

Raise the rear bending roll slightly and repeat the cycle of running the steel plate through the roll and back toward you.

    • 6

Gradually increase the height of the bending roll and cycling the steel plate through the roll until you have the steel plate rolled to the correct diameter, or the sides of the pipe touch.

    • 7

Release the top roll and slide the rolled steel plate from the power roll.
