How to Build a Mold for Concrete

Concrete garden accessories really make a home garden stand out, but these garden stones, statues and imitation flag stones can be expensive. It is less expensive to make your own concrete garden items, but to do that, you need to know how to make a mold for concrete. Making a mold can be fun, and it is fairly simple, too. But it can take a couple of days. Using concrete molds allows you to inexpensively make your own flag stone, cement tiles, statuettes and other garden items.

Liquid rubber
Stiff brushes
wood base
Clear acrylic sealer
Release agent spray
Cheese Cloth or Gauze
large wood box or plastic container
Sand

  Place the model you want to use on a wood base, and then seal it with a clear acrylic spray and sealer.

  Apply a release agent to the object, otherwise it may break as you remove the rubber mold.

  Apply a first coat of liquid rubber compound to the model with a stiff brush. Include about an inch around the model on the bottom wood base.This will give your mold a slight lip, making it easier to handle. Allow it to dry for an hour. Apply another six layers in the same manner, and allow each layer to dry before applying the next.

  Cut a piece of cheese cloth or gauze the size of your model. Place it over the model and apply another seven layers of liquid rubber, allowing each layer to dry before adding another. The cheese cloth adds strength to the rubber mold.

  Allow the mold to dry for 24 hours then remove it gently from the model.

  Embed the new mold in a plastic or wood box full of sand. This will keep the mold from losing its shape when you pour the concrete in.
