Directions for Mosaic Flower Pots

Gardeners often concern themselves not only with how their plants look but also with how the containers look. Dozens of container choices exist, from elaborately painted glazed pots to molded cement and terra cotta pedestals. These items can be expensive, but thrifty gardeners can easily spruce up existing terra cotta pots at home.

Creating mosaic garden pots is a fast and creative art project for both children and adults. Since the project uses discount or household items, it is as inexpensive as it is simple. Plus, you can customize them to your own tastes.

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap a few old ceramic tiles or dishes in a towel. Do not layer the pieces on top of each other. Lay the towel on a sturdy surface and smash the ceramic pieces with a rubber mallet using firm, steady strikes.

    • 2

Unfold the towel and spread out your pieces where you can see them. Wipe off the outside of your pot with a clean cloth to remove any dirt. Spread a little tile glue onto the pieces you want to use and stick them to the outside of the pot in abstract whorls or in distinct shapes like flowers.

    • 3

Allow the glue to dry for 24 hours. Put on your rubber gloves and mix a little tile grout powder with water according to package instructions. The grout should be about the consistency of cake frosting.

    • 4

Use a trowel to smooth grout onto the pot, pressing carefully to get it between the ceramic pieces. Once all the pieces are covered, let the grout dry for about an hour. Wipe away the grout on the ceramic pieces with a damp cloth and let the grout between the pieces cure overnight.
