Yard Art Ideas

If you feel your yard could use some jazzing up, there are a number of approaches you can take. One way is to create yard art that will delight the household occupants as well as guests. Create rudimentary sketches of the design ideas you have for your yard art and for the overall design of your yard.
  1. Cultural Themed Art

    • Develop culturally themed artwork based on a culture you would like to use as your guide. For example, string Chinese lanterns in your yard and add a few Buddhist statues and a gazebo. Or, create a reproduction of a garden you have visited that's culturally based--a traditional English garden, for instance. They tend to have a lot of vases and decorative fountains. Take a few photos of garden ideas you would like to emulate in your own yard.

    Your Own Yard Art Work

    • Another option when looking to place art in your backyard is to create your own customized objects. There are several approaches you can take. If you have some skill with carving tools, create carved artwork like an interestingly shaped bench or a series of totem poles. Or, if you know wood-burning, you can create decorative signs. Another option is to use a potters wheel and a kiln to create pottery items that can be displayed throughout your yard.

    Used Treasures

    • Look for used items at yard sales, thrift stores and estate sales that you can use as yard art. For example, you may find a used pedestal or statue you can paint or enhance with decorative touches. What types of items you choose depends on the design aesthetic you want. For instance, you may want to create a display of carved wooden animals. Consider placing a decorative fountain in your yard amid flowers and marble benches. Add a couple of found statues and you have created a peaceful haven from the world where you can read, sip afternoon tea and enjoy a bit of nature.
