Jimmy Stewart was born on May 20, 1908, in Indiana, Pennsylvania. The lanky young man attended Princeton University, which, at the time, was a school for men. While studying architecture, he joined an acting group and played the accordion. Stewart graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in 1932, then set out for Hollywood. After signing a contract with MGM Studios, his singing, dancing and acting talents were showcased in many movies, including the 1936 musical, "Born to Dance," and "The Glenn Miller Story" in 1954. One of his most memorable performances came in 1946, when he starred as George Bailey in "It's a Wonderful Life." In 1991, at 83, Stewart lent his voice as the dog-sheriff, Wylie, in "Fievel Goes West." He died on July 2, 1997 in Los Angeles at the age of 89.
Canadian born Mary Pickford was born on April 8, 1892, in Toronto, Ontario. Pickford's acting debut came at the tender age of 6, and led to a career that spanned 27 years. During that time, she was in 236 movies, many of which were silent films. She played a major role in the establishment of United Artists Pictures, which was later purchased by MGM, and she was a founding member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. In 1976, the Academy awarded her a Lifetime Achievement Award, bringing her life full-circle. Mary Pickford died in Santa Monica, Calif., as the result of a cerebral hemorrhage on May 29, 1979, when she was 87.
Walt Disney was born in Chicago on Dec. 5, 1901. Shortly after his birth, his family moved to a farm in Marceline, Mo., and as a child, Disney developed a love for animals. A few years later, his father moved the family to Kansas City, Mo., where Disney sold newspapers and candy on passenger trains. It was during this time that he began taking art lessons, leading to his career as a premier illustrator and cartoonist. He introduced the world to the characters of Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Goofy and a host of others. Disney's death on Dec. 15, 1966, came as the entrepreneur introduced the world to recreational theme parks. The Disney parks remain a popular vacation destination for people around the world.
