Homemade Garden Containers

The green movement is moving faster than ever. Kitchen gardens on windowsills and in hanging planters abound. Many homeowners are choosing to grow fresh herbs rather than purchase dried ones. These efforts improve the environment and help save money. However, planting systems can be very expensive. Instead of purchasing pre-made pots, green your garden even more by making pots from recycled containers. Feel free to unleash your creativity as you work.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash all of your containers in hot, soapy water with a scrub brush. Remove all of the labels and adhesive. Dry everything thoroughly and let the containers air-dry overnight to make sure no moisture remains.

    • 2

If you are using soda bottles, cut off the top 3 inches or so. Make your cuts as clean and straight as possible. Flip all of your containers upside down and drill a circle of 6 to 8 holes in the bottoms. These drain holes will keep your herbs from drowning.

    • 3

Measure the height and width of each container. Cut pieces of cloth from your old clothing about 1 inch wider and 3 inches longer than those dimensions.

    • 4

Coat each container in an even layer of Mod Podge. Smooth a piece of fabric onto each container, gluing down the overlapping fabric on the back with more Mod Podge. Fold the excess at the top and bottom around the edges of each container and secure it with Mod Podge as well. Let the containers dry overnight.

    • 5

Coat each container with a second Mod Podge layer. This seals the fabric. Set the containers on old dessert plates with pretty designs to use as flood trays.
